Ruth Norman was born in New York in 1909 and received her artistic education and training in Los Angeles. She was primarily self-taught, gaining valuable insights from such artists as Rico Lebrun, Arnold Mesches, Jan Stussy and Jules Engel, and from extensive European travel. In addition to her collages, acrylics and pastels, Mrs. Norman designed book covers for G. Schirmer Music Company of New York and Chappell Music Company of London. These covers accompany the musical works of her distinguished late husband, Theodore Norman (1912-1997), former head of the guitar department at the University of California, Los Angeles. Mr. Norman was a noted teacher, composer and transcriber (for guitar) with many credits and publications to his name. Ruth Norman's paintings are in numerous collections in Italy, Antwerp, London, Madrid, Australia, Venezuela and the Netherlands, as well as the United States. Ruth passed away June 19, 2010. She lived and worked in West Hollywood, California.
